Before and After Image of Ncobile Mkhonta

How you can support Ncobile to improve her nursery garden

Despite extreme, drought-prone conditions, Ncobile already has a flourishing nursery boasting beet, cabbage, pepper, banana, tomatoes, sweet grass, mint, apple, cassava and paw paw. This is a real achievement given that she only has access to one tap with a sporadic water supply, or must make the 1.2 kilometres (0.75 mile) trip to the nearest stream.

Ncobile has begun training with GardenAfrica, learning gardening techniques which enable her to capture and conserve water in order to irrigate her land and feed her family. The excess she will sell or exchange for other essential goods and services, such as school fees. In the future she plans to grow spinach, potatoes and carrots which she will learn to store to feed her extended family during the dry months. Combined with her new-found skills, Ncobile's courage and hard work will make her household less vulnerable. We will be following her progress closely, and will keep you updated over the coming months.

£10 could buy a watering can, pick, spade and fork.

£15 could buy a beehive. Bees are essential for pollination and greatly increase the productivity of a garden.

£20 could buy a 'chicken tractor.' In this moveable enclosure, chickens scratch and fertilise the hard, sun baked earth in preparation for planting, while giving eggs to the family. This gift includes one enclosure and two hens.
