The GardenAfrica Garden Plan

This garden plan, developed from GardenAfrica's training manual for our 2006 Chelsea Flower Show garden, provides an illustration of how a small intensively managed family garden of 100 sq metres, can sustain a family of 5 (2 adults & 3 children) all year, every year.

A Bird's Eye View of a Sustainable Township Garden

This layout represents a typical GardenAfrica garden in Southern Africa. Combining nutritional information, Permaculture principles and natural African farming techniques, it is readily transferable and taught on training courses run with communities at schools and clinics. Methods focus on low input/high yield methods specifically designed for those who are weak and immune compromised. It is designed to harvest, store and sink water - with simple techniques for building soil fertility and structure and increasing moisture retention. The central spiral feature allows optimum spacing for companion plants to ward off pests, retains water and enables the gardener to harvest without expending too much energy, or damaging the beds.
