At 7 David had difficulty concentrating at school, and became frustrated at his inability to communicate. Before his teacher, Neliswe, trained on GardenAfrica's teacher training course, she was concerned that he was becoming a destructive influence. The threat of exclusion in the township of Gugulethu, where gun crime is rife, could have set him on a road to lifelong hardship & violence. Regular meals from the school gardens improved David's concentration. Now David brings his waste water into the garden to irrigate the plants every day before registration and, through his practical Natural Science lessons in the garden, David is determined to become a scientist, or a footballer, he can't quite decide.
