Pushing Up Daisies - Leave a Legacy

Leave a lasting contribution to fellow gardeners in Africa

With your support we can continue to help the most vulnerable to produce their own food and give them the best chance for a sustainable and healthy future.

By remembering a charity in your Will, you can leave the world a better place

Making a will is the only way you can be sure that your wishes will be followed after you die and that your Estate will be distributed as you wish. If you don’t make a will, the law will decide where your money goes. If you don’t prepare properly, a substantial part of what you leave behind may go to the State in Inheritance Tax. If you have no partner, or relatives and you die ‘intestate’ (without having made a Will), the Government will keep your entire Estate.

Many people who give to charity choose to leave something to their favourite causes when they pass away. Not only does this create a fitting legacy, it also passes on valuable tax advantages to the benefiting charities. If you want to leave something to a charity, the donation can be as small or as large as you like. However much you decide to give, you can rest assured that the charity will not have to pay any Inheritance Tax on the donation.

Or you may wish to leave assets to a charity by setting up a Trust. If you are considering setting up a Trust it is worth talking to a professional to gain specialist help and advice. If you feel that it would be appropriate to leave a charitable donation in your Will, your solicitor will be able to advise you on what is best suited to your circumstances.

Why you should leave a gift in your will to GardenAfrica

GardenAfrica is a UK-based charity that trains communities in Southern Africa to create gardens and grow their own plants for food, medicine and as a source of income. We work with trusted local partners to establish productive organic training gardens in schools, hospitals and clinics, providing the tools needed to produce a balanced diet and support a more sustainable approach to healthcare. Our work helps to relieve poverty, sickness and distress in rural communities in Africa. By providing training, information and other assistance and through the undertaking and dissemination of research, our project work ensures that even the most vulnerable can cultivate a sustainable future and improve their quality of life.

A typical GardenAfrica family plot of just 100 square metres can feed and medicate a family of five all year round – every year – free from dependency and debt.

This could be your legacy.

What should I do now?

If you are making a Will or setting up a Trust, speak to your solicitor about your plans in detail. Everyone’s circumstances are different, and your solicitor will advise on the best options for you.

If you already have a Will, you can choose to support GardenAfrica’s work by simply adding a Codicil to it. Your solicitor will be able to help you with this.

Please consider leaving a donation to your favourite cause. Donations in Wills prove invaluable to charities, helping them to provide vital services that can lead to a better life for the disadvantaged, less cruelty to animals, a better environment, treatment of life-threatening diseases ... and much more.

You could be making a valuable difference for the causes you care about most.

There are three main ways to leave a legacy to GardenAfrica

A Residual Bequest
– the residue, or a percentage of the residue, of what is left from your Estate once all other expenses have been deducted.
A Pecuniary Gift – a gift of a specific sum of money. Remember that this amount may be greatly eroded by inflation over the years and so should be reviewed regularly.
A Specific Non-Money Gift – An item of value, such as a house or jewellery, which GardenAfrica could then sell.

Should you decide to include GardenAfrica in your Will, you will need to use legal wording and include our full name and address.

For a Residual Bequest:

“I GIVE [the residue] or [a ___ % share of the residue] of my Estate to GardenAfrica (registered charity no. 1093568) of Garden Annex, Wren Cottage, High Street, Burwash, East Sussex TN19 7HA for its general purposes; and I DIRECT that the receipt of the Treasurer or duly authorised officer shall be a valid and appropriate discharge for the same.”

For a Pecuniary Gift:

“I GIVE the sum of £ _______ to GardenAfrica (registered charity no. 1093568) of Garden Annex, Wren Cottage, High Street, Burwash, East Sussex TN19 7HA for its general purposes; and I DIRECT that the receipt of the Treasurer or duly authorised officer shall be a valid and appropriate discharge for the same.”

For a Specific Non-Money Gift:

“I GIVE ________________ (name and detail item/s) to GardenAfrica (registered charity no. 1093568) of Garden Annex, Wren Cottage, High Street, Burwash, East Sussex TN19 7HA for its general purposes; and I DIRECT that the receipt of the Treasurer or duly authorised officer shall be a valid and appropriate discharge for the same.”

If you do decide to leave a gift to the GardenAfrica or have already included us in your Will, we would be most grateful if you could inform us of your intentions, as this will help us to plan for the future.

“There is no need that the plant kingdom cannot supply. There is no challenge to which it cannot rise. All that is required is a measure of human ingenuity, intelligence and the political will to care for it.” (Anthony Huxley)
