GardenAfrica currently works in Southern Africa, providing training and support for the most vulnerable and resource poor, enabling them to cultivate their own food rather than depending on aid, and conserve important species to promote health and create plant-based livelihoods.
We work with knowledgeable and trusted local partners in Namibia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and South Africa to establish productive training gardens, each of which become a forum for community exchange. In these gardens people learn to identify and support their family and community needs, and establish micro-nurseries from which to supply other budding gardeners and smallholders with advice and materials.
These networks are at the heart of providing practical and effective solutions for building community health and livelihoods, ensuring the continuation of vital botanical and horticultural knowledge through to the next generation of carers and providers.
Did You Know?
A typical GardenAfrica family plot of just 100sq metres can feed and medicate a family of five, all year round - every year - free from dependency and debt.
Garden Plan
GardenAfrica applies principals of agro-ecology to train people to manage their resources in ways that are ecologically sustainable and culturally appropriate for small scale production. These are designed for the restoration and management of available natural resources, providing positive livelihood opportunities to improve health, productivity and quality of life.
Did you know?
A skilled gardener can produce up to five times more than a conventional farmer working land of comparable size. By carefully selecting and layering species which are appropriate for that environment, he or she is able to:
• increase soil fertility
• reduce the amount of water required for irrigation
• alleviate the need for costly synthetic pesticides and fertilisers
• increase the diversity of food for family consumption and trade, and
• spread the risk of drought, pests and pathogens.
